So now that the internet blackout day is over - though I'm sure none of you could tell I was waiting a day to post (hehe, sorry, really hoping 2012 will improve for me). I think what a lot of people don't realize is how negatively these bills could effect sights like etsy and deviantart. They are hosting sites, who don't really take much (or any) effort to weed out the pieces displayed on their websites that violate copyright infringement - and there are a LOT of cases of blatant illegal copyright infringement on both sights (and the rest like them, like Artfire, or whathaveyou). Thing is, with SOPA, websites like DA and Etsy could be shut down at their core for hosting people's shops and galleries if any of them contained copyrighted works. Thing is, if they shut down the sites at their core, that means all of us who have truly original, completely legal pieces, get shut down, too. We don't have to worry about prosecution, true; but if Etsy or Deviantart got flagged for hosting illegal material, then every account at Etsy or Deviantart would get closed down as well, until a court hearing could be made and resolved.
So yeah, that's an application that hadn't occurred to me until yesterday when I was reading up on things and saw that Etsy had joined the protest.
