So the holidays are here and across the country you can hear wallets weeping.

I just found Plaid Friday today and fully support the idea of voting for economic change with your holiday purchases.

The idea of voting with your shopping dollars is simple: every time you spend a dollar you are telling the company you gave that money to, "I support what you're doing.  Keep doing it!"  If you take a moment to think about where your dollars go, what companies you're voting for, as it were, you might not like the way it feels.

Especially with the help of the internet today, there's no reason why you have to do your holiday shopping at massive chain stores that only feed the corporate monster.  We have etsy and craft markets and independent artisans and even small businesses all over the country.  And when you give them your money, you're not only telling them, "I support what you're doing.  Keep doing it!" You're sending a message to the big companies' bottom lines, saying just the opposite.  And the more people vote with their money, the more of an effect it will have.

And I want to support this.  I've already planned to do the bulk of my holiday shopping at craft fairs, with local artisans, and through sites like etsy where my money will go directly to the craftsman.  (There will also be lots of homemade gifting)

But how to get Izile's Oddities as a participant.  I will (hopefully) be vending at at least one local market during December (more details once confirmations are in), but I also want to do something on line.

I haven't exactly decided yet what the sale will be, BOGO half off, buy 2 get 1 free, free mini gift with purchase. . . I dunno what would work best at this point.

I do think I'm going to reopen Izile's Oddities to the barter system, however.  If you see something in Izile's Oddities that you would like to get someone as a gift, but are a little strapped on cash (as aren't we all!) and you can barter something that I need/want to give someone as a gift, then we can trade!

If you're at all interested in a quill pen of any kind, I'd love to barter with you! Maybe if anyone you know is a huge Harry Potter geek or just fancies arcane writing utensils.

What are you looking for in terms of trading goods?

Well, I have a gothy girl to get something nice for (but no bath/body for her), I have two other girls who love independent perfumers/bath/body stuff, one is also really gothy, the other is very science-y, I have a new roommate who I don't know as well as them, I have a sister, who's hard to put into words, but I guess I'd know it when I saw it for her, something small for a geek-tastic b/f, something that would be good for a less than a year old baby, or semi-new parents (over 6 months, less than 1 year), plus a Dad that's impossible to shop for (possibly something edible?) and a Mom that's more complicated than the sister (also no bath/body) . . .

wish I could be more specific.

Hmm, well, I dabble primarily in jewelry as well, so if you're interested, you could point something out from my gallery and I can make something similar. All up to you :) You know them better than I, after all.

I don't imagine I could help with something edible; I'm not much of a baker, I'm afraid.

Yeah, I appreciate the offer, but I think I'm going to have to scratch jewelry off for anyone (even the one gothy girl told me recently that she doesn't want any more jewelry), and my sister also makes her own, and has a fairly unique/distinctive taste.

Thanks, though!

I would love to do a trade with you! I have my trade info here: [link] for the people I need to get items for this season. Take a look at it and if you think you have something that will anyone on the list let me know. I'll make a custom item for you in exchange.

Wow. . . I just don't think the kind of stuff I make would work for any of those guys. The only thing that I have that I think might work for any of the people you described in your link was *maybe* MAYBE one of the table top AD&D guys might like a print of the fantasy map I painted with the various races kingdoms written out in their various languages. . I mean, feel free to look for yourself, but I'm drawing a blank. Sorry.
